FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BANDRESAWS
What is the difference between a bandsaw and a resaw?
A bandsaw is a versatile woodworking tool used for a wide range of cutting tasks, including curved cuts, crosscuts, and ripping through material. It features a continuous blade that moves on two wheels, allowing for precise cuts in various shapes and thicknesses.
A resaw, on the other hand, refers specifically to the process of cutting a thick piece of wood into thinner slabs. While resawing can be done on a regular bandsaw, a band resaw is a specialized version of a bandsaw designed primarily for this purpose. Band resaws have wider blades and larger throat capacities to handle thicker material and make precise, thin cuts across large boards.
What is a band resaw?
A band resaw is a woodworking machine designed specifically for slicing large pieces of timber into thinner slabs or veneers. It is equipped with a wide blade and a powerful motor to handle thick materials, making it ideal for tasks like cutting lumber down to size, producing veneers, or preparing boards for specific dimensions. Unlike standard bandsaws, which are more general-purpose, band resaws are focused on maximizing yield from thick wood pieces with precision and minimal waste.
What size bandsaw do you need for resawing?
The size of the bandsaw you need for resawing depends on the thickness of the material you’re working with. The key factors to consider are throat capacity (the distance between the blade and the frame of the saw) and resaw height capacity (the maximum height the blade can cut through).
For effective resawing, a bandsaw with at least 12 to 14 inches of resaw height is ideal. The motor power is also important; a bandsaw with a motor of at least 1.5 to 2 horsepower (HP) will provide the necessary power to cut through thick hardwoods without bogging down.
Can you resaw with a bandsaw?
Yes, you can resaw with a bandsaw, and it’s one of the most common tools for this task. While general-purpose bandsaws can handle resawing, it’s crucial to use the right blade, typically a wide, low-toothed blade that minimizes drift and produces cleaner cuts. The wider the blade, the better it will track straight through thick material. For small-scale resawing tasks, even a standard bandsaw can be effective, but for more frequent and demanding projects, a specialized band resaw or an upgraded bandsaw designed for resawing will offer better results.
